Cherokee in the snow

Shame about the audio, but a good video of a 1999 XJ drifting in the snow and smashing though 4ft snow drifts.

It's amazing what an old Jeep Cherokee can do as a stock vehicle...

Fuel Consumption of a Jeep Cherokee XJ

The quoted fuel economy of an XJ Cherokee is about 20 miles per gallon (UK). This equates to about 14 litres per 100km or 16.6 mpg (US).

This seems about right from my own personal experience. With petrol prices seemingly endlessly rising, I wonder if it would be any use converting to LPG.

Does anyone have any advice?

Car Show Review

1997 BBC Top Gear review of the Jeep Cherokee XJ. I didn't notice Jeeps in 1997, but it seems they were something special even then...

Clever balancing act in a Jeep Cherokee XJ.

One capable old 4X4...

Not that I go hill climbing or water fording myself, it's nice to know that it can be done like this in an old stock Cherokee.

This one in a raised XJ with big wheels shows what's so good about Jeeps.

I like this one too.

Jeep Cherokee XJ Cup Holders

After driving more modern cars for a while I came to rely on the humble cup holder and had actually forgotten that they are a relatively new innovation in the automotive world.

They are such a useful and simple thing, it's hard to imagine why we haven't had them forever.

It reminds me of the observation that we put man on the moon in 1969 but it took until the 1980's to put wheels on luggage.

In any case, here's a cup holder made specifically for the centre console of the Jeep Cherokee XJ up to the 1996 model. Just waiting for mine to arrive!

Shifting problem

I posted a question on a Jeep Cherokee Yahoo group about a problem I've been having. I'll post it here in case it helps anyone.

Switch between 2X4 and 4X4 HI on the fly not working properly

Wed Jul 25, 2007 9:42 pm (PST)

I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem as me, where when
I try to shift from 2WD to 4WD on the fly, it gets stuck in Part Time
4WD and won't shift properly unless I stop and go forwards and
backwards a bit for a few times?

It's really annoying and potentially damaging, so I tend just to leave
it in 4WD. I suspect that doing this is costing me fuel economy.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Andrew.

PS. It's a '96 XJ Cherokee Limited

Normal. 4wd hi is for wet surface, dirt roads, and snow. If your rear axle
is 3.55 gears, then the front is 3.54. Not much difference, but when used
on roads were you have solid traction, that small fraction adds up over
distance and it binds up the case. I have had it stay engaged for almost a
quater mile before and then it slams like I hit a truck. On loose surface,
it will naturally not bind.

Model Jeep Cherokee XJ

Even though the XJ is one of Jeep's most popular models ever, there is noone manufacturing plastic models of them.

Here's a link to a site to petition a toy company to make them.

Dream XJ

This makes me drool! I love the huge tyres and the high lift and cut out flares.

More Cherokees I almost bought...

Here are some more Jeeps I almost bought. An XJ Limited, a Grand Cherokee Limited and a 2002 Cherokee Limited.

In the end, it came down to price. The cheapest of these was $1,500 more expensive than the one I bought and no better. I guess you pay a dealer premium.

Driven into the ground

Fantastic footage of a group of Brits with an old XJ Cherokee that didn't pass inspection. They gave her a good run before taking her to the scrapyard.

It shows how tough these things are.

Enjoy!
